What is a Chief Executive Supposed to do? – by Peter Hills & Alan Dean

So you have the top job you aspired to all those years ago! Now that you are there, is it how you thought it would be? Did anyone give you a manual to follow or did you just remember what your boss did and hope that your way would work as well or better?

Unfortunately, there is no manual and life at the top can be tough and lonely. Most good leaders recognise that they can never know everything and that they must keep learning. Some will even admit that they don’t really know what a Chief Executive should do! Within any business the Chief Executive can never be truly open and honest as, being the boss, means that you need to appear strong even when you may be struggling.

So how do you know how well you perform?

Having a network of people who challenge and support and who are unbiased but understand what you are experiencing, is critical to the emotional and intellectual wellbeing of a Chief Executive and is only truly available from outside the business.
