Learning about ‘Fake’ Leaders and ‘Real’ Leaders with Ian Berry – by Joe Adams

Ian Berry

Ian Berry

Ian Berry from Australia spoke to my Academy for Chief Executives CEO Forum group (ACE11) recently. The subject, “What real leaders do and fake ones don’t”.  He was brilliant and scored very highly with the CEO members present.

The first half of the talk featured on:

  • Living the lessons of our defining moments.
  • Being a hero in your own home first.
  • Living paradox i.e. compete with yourself and co-operate with others.

This was probably the best talk on leadership I’ve heard and Ian Berry is completely authentic and as they say in Yorkshire, “he calls a spade a shovel”.

In the second half of his talk Ian discussed the three key paradigm shifts that are changing the face of modern day business i.e.

  1. Moving from vision to compelling story.
  2. Mission to cause profits (and beyond)
  3. Values to virtues.

One of my members was particularly moved by Ian Berry’s need for all executives to develop:

  • An attitude of gratitude
  • Are you a pretender or a contender?
  • If people aren’t following (you) as the leader, you’re just talking a walk.
  • Change is always with us; all aspects of all things…nothing is consistent
  • Eat more frogs

and went on to say, “I am learning how to relate more to each other’s styles – I am learning that to ask for help and being vulnerable is still a challenge for me however I am beginning to see/feel the benefits largely due to my participation in ACE Group 11“.

Good business leaders, like you, often feel very alone. Running a business is tough. Key decision making, company direction, clarity of strategy, personal development; it’s a huge responsibility and it’s entirely yours. Little wonder you’re sometimes sleepless in the small hours or struggling to answer those really big questions.
Who can you turn to for totally impartial advice?
