How to Fund Charities in the 21st Century?

At a recent meeting of experiential business learning® group, The Academy for Chief Executives, the chief executive of a major UK charity raised the issue of how to fund charities in the in the 21st century. The charity is primarily involved in community care.

The third sector is an important business sector and has some significant special challenges facing it. The perceptive insights of a group of entrepreneurs and corporate members were really valuable to the charity sector member and showed once again how fruitful it can be when such mixed sector dialogues take place. All sorts of ideas were put forth including maximisation of current assets, novel ways of obtaining contributions from the public and ensuring that whatever action was taken the core values of the charity were preserved.

The entrepreneurs and corporate sectors are usually well represented around the Academy table; when the third sector is present too all sorts of interesting benefits can result. It is mutually beneficial to everyone, a bit like having your own board of non-executive directors around the table – offering you impartial, knowledgable and seasoned advice. (In fact that’s why we call it ‘The Board You Could Never Afford®’).

For confidentiality reasons we cannot divulge all of the advice provided by our members – however, we do hold open meetings where guests are able to attend and experience for themselves the real power of shared experience and experiential learning alongside fellow leaders, CEOs, MDs and entrepreneurs.
